Now that Spring has finally arrived, at least on the calendar, sprinkled with intermittent sunny days, what’s the best, quickest and most affordable way to launch our new season’s look?

The first answer is that little accessory we know and loved all winter… the scarf. Available in more styles, patterns and colors, the new lightweight scarf is your best fashion friend for Spring 2010! This accessory essential will add a fresh touch to your transitional wardrobe that you are getting tired of seeing let alone putting on. You can wrap it, twist it and tie it. You can wear it as a shawl for an added layer (of warmth) or venture out and use it as a head wrap for a more dramatic look. Fresh scarves should be one of the first additions to your accessory selection for this coming season. You will find them in every price range to suit your budget (or indulgence), for yourself or as a great gift for just about anyone.

At LBMgifts, our early spring selections begin with soft jersey knit scarves in yummy candy colors. Measuring a generous 80” l, they can be worn in many different ways. Prints to look for include neutral tie-dye mixes like indigo/white, black/white and brown/white and paisleys with a shot of bright color that coordinate well with your current winter wardrobe but will still work with your nicer weather looks later on.

It’s also time to think about your perfect bag(s) for Spring 2010. Roomy, unstructured shapes continue to prevail. Not a surprise, as they make a lot of practical sense, enabling us to carry everything we need from our beauty essentials to electronic must haves. This Spring’s offerings come in a choice of bright colors— lipstick pink, tangerine orange, turquoise, bright blue and lifesaver green. So if you didn’t have the courage to step out and carry something other than your basic black, now is the time to go for it! Bags don’t just look great this spring. Many are made of high quality faux leather, a material that is both lightweight and durable, eco friendly and cruelty free—all that plus the best feature of all --very reasonable prices.

As far as trendy jewelry goes, keep wearing and looking for chunky necklaces. After gaining popularity over this past Fall/Winter, the statement necklace is still so this coming season. These wonderful pieces are innovative collections of unique charms, unfinished stones, pearls and various non-traditional findings. You will find so many different looks that catch your eye. These necklaces make an easy finishing touch and great gift for women of every look and age. They are surprisingly lightweight, comfortable to wear and priced right. The selection at LBMgifts includes striking stone pendants on fine chains to freshwater pearls mixed with suede or leather and other unusual combinations. We are always excited to find and introduce new designers who handcraft most of their collections.

So now that winter is finally behind us, go ahead and treat yourself (and your friends) to a guilt free gift and get your spring season started!

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’s time to get the remaining names on your gift list taken care of and crossed off. In Part I, we offered gift suggestions for guys searching for delightfully thoughtful (not necessarily expensive and/or cliché) gifts for their favorite ladies. But now, what to get him? Whether it’s your main squeeze, dad or platonic best friend, coming up with new gifts for guys continues to be, for the most part, a challenge. The good news is that is really isn’t as daunting as it seems. Whether it is something practical (like the latest cordless super model drill or the newest top of the line golf club), humorous (think useful gadgets with a twist) or pampering (real men do light candles!), at LBMgifts, we find that most well adjusted guys are sincerely touched when they feel the thoughtfulness behind your gift selection.

Lovers, Spouses and Secret Admirers!
From the silent type to the fluent conversationalist, we speak your language… the language of love.

On Valentine’s Day, we want to remember all our significant someone(s) at home, at work
or school and in our social circle. Playing Cupid, so soon after the holiday season, can be tough on your budget. But like other gift giving occasions, you should set a limit (as hard as it may be to put a price tag on love!) and make your list, starting with your significant other and kids, followed by close family members, your dearest friend(s) and those who have gone out of their way to save the day or make your life a bit easier.

Diamonds and rubies, sapphires and emeralds… all good. But, you might find that they are out of your price range this year for most people on your list. From trinkets to treasures, “think out of the (shiny, lacy heart shaped) box”! Expressions of love and appreciation come in many shapes and sizes, so you don’t have to settle for the proverbial (and commercial) chocolates or (obscenely overpriced) bouquet of roses.

Instead, sweep up your Valentine(s) with sublime gifts that don’t wilt or tip the scale and will be appreciated by most anyone long after the 14th has past. Besides, your recipient would probably prefer to wear your gift on her ears, neck or wrist than on her hips or thighs (with, perhaps, the exception of exquisite lingerie)!

Ideas for HER

Affordable Jewels:
~Handmade, semi-precious jewelry with mixes of amethyst, garnet, peridot or citrine in earrings and delicate pendant necklaces.
~Sterling silver pieces featuring words or symbols including karma, love, peace and inspirational phrases on cuff bracelets and coin shaped charm necklaces.
~Trendy jewelry like big earrings, chunky bracelets and statement necklaces

(Guy Advice: When selecting big earrings, make sure they are not too heavy. All earrings should be finished with NICKEL FREE hooks or wires to prevent allergic reactions.)

~ scented soy candles – they burn clean and smell delightful
~ fine soaps and body lotions and, don’t forget, her favorite perfume.

(Guy Advice: Unless she’s actually allergic to fragrance, every woman likes to smell and to smell something good.)

Now you are armed and ready with all the advice and ideas you need to look like a hero and enjoy a wonderful Valentine’s Day with yours. Finally, be sure your gift is be wrapped to the nines. Presentation is everything, and this is never more true than on Valentines. You don’t have to go out and buy a new coat. Instead, update the one(s) you have with the many fun, fashionable and affordable cold-weather accessories of the season. From head to hands, textured, patterned and chunky knits dominate. Fingerless gloves (sounds like an oxymoron, but read on!) will be even more popular with the evergrowing “texting” crowd. Floppy brimmed caps and wool knit cloches will top heads as the weather gets cold. While the biggest wardrobe addition of all will be the wide choice of novel and interesting scarves.

HEAD TOPPERS
Not surprisingly, with so much body heat loss coming from your head, hats are for more than just fashionistas. From sensible to stylish, hats make a statement about you, whether you put one on for one reason or the other, or both. Look for a silhouette that, most importantly, is comfortable to wear. The fit should feel right, and the fabric should be non-irritating against your skin so it can be worn for long periods of time. And finally, your hat should work with the look and color of your coat or outfit.

The big shape this year is the floppy beret with or without a brim in cables and other chunky knits and crochet stitches. Details will include pompoms, fabric flower and fur (let’s support the “faux” version) adornments.

The last, but not least, trendy touch is color. Look for hats in a big selection of great hues that coordinate with all the colored suede boots—in addition to proverbial black, choose from rich tones of plum, teal, deep red and mustard yellow.

Be adventurous. This is not a big investment, and, as my niece so wisely put it, “ there’s nothing wrong with going a little bit out of your comfort zone.”

NECK WRAPS
You will find a diverse collection of lengths, shapes and colors, this season that will change the look of your outfit in an instant. With a plethora of choices at a wide range of prices, you will have a hard time picking your must-haves and must-gives.

Starting with pattern, texture and color, choices abound—from plaids, stripes and paisley patterns to ruched, brushed and novelty stitches. When it comes to scarves, don’t just reach for black (or brown). This is the piece that should add a splash of color to your all-black ensemble.

We, at LBMgifts, see the lighterweight, dressier scarves as an alternate to the statement necklaces we are wearing this Fall. Drapey fabrics of with burn-out velvet and appliqué designs feel comfortable and add an instant finishing touch. Also, try out the almost blanket size, ultra-thin wraps that may be the most versatile scarf you’ve ever owned. This silhouette easily loops around the neck without feeling bulky, or wear it open as an impromptu full length shawl. Another interesting and versatile shape is the trapezoid that can be wrapped or tied a multiple of ways. Our favorite is our pompom trimmed style that comes in six gorgeous colors and is affordably priced at $24.00.

Don’t forget that scarves also make wonderful gifts for the Holiday season for just about every woman or man on your list. You can find one for every taste and at every price range to fit your gift giving budget. Everyone wears one and needs to have more than one at hand for a finishing accessory or dash out the door.

HAND SAVERS
Your hard working hands must be well protected from the cold as the temperature drops. This season, gloves offer fashion along with warmth. There are lots of options out there in a variety of lengths, colors and details. Whether leather, suede, velvet or knit, these gauntlets will feature ruching and gathering, ruffled borders and button closures.

With the emergence of sleeveless and short sleeved dresses, as well as, three-quarter and bracelet sleeved jackets and coats, fashionable and functional arm warmers and (really) long gloves will cover bare arms perfectly. Keeping cozy never looked so chic!

Fingerless gloves, the style that used to be just an “I don't get it" look, now takes on a new meaning. Have you ever tried texting with gloves on? From cute flip top mittens to glamour-esque elbow reaching styles, fingerless features give you the ability to keep in touch without missing a key. The LBMgift pick is a trendy cabled pair from San Diego Hat Company. These make a really unique gift for the younger crowd!

Once again, color, color, color. Match your colored bag, match your colored boots. You can’t go wrong, since most everything goes with black!

Now you and everyone on your gift list can be warm and fashionable this season. Remember, you don’t have to break your budget to give and get great accessories that will be worn and appreciated until the Spring.

TEACHERS (GIFTS) COME IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES

Chuck the apples (with and without worms), rulers and blackboards marked “A+” when selecting gifts for your child’s teachers. Imagine how many of these a seasoned teacher has received over the years!

Instead, think “out of the classroom” and the great gift ideas are endless. For women, teachers of any age like to be in style. If you happen to know her well, zero in on something that matches an outfit you saw her in or that reminds you of her personality—earrings, bracelets, or chunky necklaces for summer accessorizing.

http://lbmgifts.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=7_29

If you feel jewelry is too “personal”, almost everyone enjoys a blissfully scented candle, triple milled soap or other aromatherapy item because pampering items are not usually purchased for oneself. So, for $25 and less, you can make her feel relaxed and appreciated.

Got a guy teacher? You know he’s going to be flooded with gift cards from Starbucks and Barnes and Nobles, which will be spent and forgotten. Think “unique and useful” somthing he will enjoy using and remind him of his year with your child. May we suggest conversational desk organizers like our twin Buddhas letter holder, photo paperweights and multi function keyrings—or well designed travel items (teachers go places on all their breaks and summer holidays). Again, there is lots to choose from in that $25 range.

Finally, don’t forget the final touch…. a card with short handwritten note of appreciation from you and your child.

LBM had the enjoyable opportunity to share some of our ideas about Father's Day gift giving with Newsday writer, Joseph Amodio.

Q: WHY DOES IT SEEM SO MUCH HARDER TO BUY A GOOD GIFT FOR DAD THAN IT DOES FOR MOM? (YOU KNOW HOW DADS ALWAYS GET STUCK WITH THE STEREOTYPICAL TIE OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

A: Reason 1:
Dads don’t wear dangling earrings, beaded bracelet or carry trendy handbags which are so much easier to find and fun to buy.

Reason 2:
When Dad wants something, he goes out and buys it, leaving little to nothing on his wish list at any given time.

Reason 3:
Dad ends up with the proverbial tie because it's the only fashion accessory he changes daily, which leaves everyone else tied up in
(k)nots!

Q: OR HAVE YOU GIVEN A GIFT TO YOUR OWN DAD--OR YOUR KIDS GIVEN SOMETHING TO YOUR HUSBAND--IN THE PAST THAT REALLY GOT A GREAT REACTION, AND WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM THAT?

A:The best Father's Day gifts my husband has received include several unique yet functional things that he appreciates more and more over time.

Among his favorites are his leather triple travel frame that holds pictures of our three kids when he's on the road, his "shots to go" flask that takes the edge off those family functions and his bulb handled shaving set that takes the doldrums out of this daily chore.

I realize that Dads appreciate gifts that show their needs, interests and tastes have been considered not how much you've spent.

Most moms are thrilled with any gift they receive: the necklaces made from pasta, the cards made at school, the flowerpot decorated with colored fingerprints, and the 14-carat gold charm that says "#1 Mom" (remember: corny but cute). These are all sentimental favorites.

But let's face it, when it comes to shopping for Mother's Day gifts, a lot can go wrong. So, we present the worst Mother's Day gifts (along with some alternatives). And don't say we didn't warn you.

"Jillian Michaels – 30-Day Shred" DVD
You may have heard mom talking about wanting to become a "Shred Head," but it's probably not wise for you buy her the "Jillian Michaels – 30-Day Shred" DVD. Instead of viewing it as a way to kickstart a new fitness plan, she may see it as hint that you're not happy with her body. Instead, get her a copy of her favorite movie that you'll watch together. Better yet? Hire a babysitter (if she's a mom of young kids) and take her to the movies, and let her pick the flick, natch.

A session (or ten) with a personal trainer
Ouch. That's what mom will be thinking if you give her a session with a personal trainer–and not because of the post-workout pain. We repeat: Stay away from any gifts that implies that the mother in your life needs to exercise. Instead, why not fill in for her a few nights a week so she can have some time to herself.

A new apron
Does mom really need a reminder of how much time she spends cleaning the house? Instead, send her away to a spa for the morning whle you do the cleaning up!

A Snuggie
Haven't we all agreed that the Snuggie is not cool? If you want your mom or wife to feel warm and cozy, try finding a super comfortable quilt that she can share on a picnic, at a ball game, or watching the sunset on a date night with hubby.

Clothes in the wrong size
Even if you have a smooth sense of style, getting mom clothes in the wrong size has always been a huge gift-giving no-no. Just sneak a peek at the tags on her clothes for sizes and make sure to go to the same store as the tags you looked at!

Nothing
Dads, this message is for you. Just because, you know, she's not your mom (she's only helping you raise your beautiful kids), doesn't mean you should forget
her on this special day. Have a heart and show your lady how much you adore her and how you appreciate the amazing job she's doing as a mom.

Don’t leave your child basketless this Easter. The repercussions of this faux pas could resonate in your child’s memory throughout their adult lives. With minimal effort and expense, you can put together, an exciting basket to celebrate this season.

First of all, you can forgo the (expense of) basket itself. After all, how many do you actually need collecting in your attic or basement? Or go up (or down) and fetch one from there and reuse--thus contributing to our much needed recycling efforts.

Other options are small colorful buckets or containers that double as hair clip or pencil holders later on. We love our bright purses that are similar to a Chinese take out container with rounded edges, attached lid and matching handle. For boys, use something like an insulated lunch tote that will can be used for toting sports drinks and snacks to activities throughout the spring and summer months. Fill with age appropriate items that your kids will enjoy for more than just the moment. Remember that less is more! A nice piece of trend costume jewelry for her or hands on gadget or game for him will be worth more than half a dozen “junkie” toys that don’t work properly or fall apart after its planned obsolescence time of a minute or two. Add a few trimmings- chocolate eggs, jelly beans, little chicks or stickers, wrap the whole thing up in crisp clear cello wrap and top with a bow.

Happy Hunting!

As you prepare to host (or attend) this year’s Passover Seder, think about little finishing touches that will enhance your (or your hostess’) serving table and home decor on that day and beyond. In addition to proverbial flowers, there are many choices from beautifully scented candles to decorative serving pieces to add (or bring) that will be useful (and appreciated) throughout the year.

In addition, being ready to keep little ones entertained is always a plus to all guests. Provide a small inexpensive selection of hands on activities that feature the Passover theme, including compact sand art kits, velvet art drawing kits, colorful card decks and matching games. It’s a fun way to introduce and reinforce the symbols that make the tradition of Pasover so important.

For tips on seating at more formal Seder gatherings, check out our blog “Where Should I Sit” posted on 12/17/08. And don’t forget to politely remind all guests (with the exception of any doctors on call) to silence their phones and refrain from texting at the table.
