CURES FOR THE WINTER BLUES: FASHION ESSENTIALS FOR SPRING 2010

Now that Spring has finally arrived, at least on the calendar, sprinkled with intermittent sunny days, what’s the best, quickest and most affordable way to launch our new season’s look?

The first answer is that little accessory we know and loved all winter… the scarf. Available in more styles, patterns and colors, the new lightweight scarf is your best fashion friend for Spring 2010! This accessory essential will add a fresh touch to your transitional wardrobe that you are getting tired of seeing let alone putting on. You can wrap it, twist it and tie it. You can wear it as a shawl for an added layer (of warmth) or venture out and use it as a head wrap for a more dramatic look. Fresh scarves should be one of the first additions to your accessory selection for this coming season. You will find them in every price range to suit your budget (or indulgence), for yourself or as a great gift for just about anyone.

At LBMgifts, our early spring selections begin with soft jersey knit scarves in yummy candy colors. Measuring a generous 80” l, they can be worn in many different ways. Prints to look for include neutral tie-dye mixes like indigo/white, black/white and brown/white and paisleys with a shot of bright color that coordinate well with your current winter wardrobe but will still work with your nicer weather looks later on.

It’s also time to think about your perfect bag(s) for Spring 2010. Roomy, unstructured shapes continue to prevail. Not a surprise, as they make a lot of practical sense, enabling us to carry everything we need from our beauty essentials to electronic must haves. This Spring’s offerings come in a choice of bright colors— lipstick pink, tangerine orange, turquoise, bright blue and lifesaver green. So if you didn’t have the courage to step out and carry something other than your basic black, now is the time to go for it! Bags don’t just look great this spring. Many are made of high quality faux leather, a material that is both lightweight and durable, eco friendly and cruelty free—all that plus the best feature of all --very reasonable prices.

As far as trendy jewelry goes, keep wearing and looking for chunky necklaces. After gaining popularity over this past Fall/Winter, the statement necklace is still so this coming season. These wonderful pieces are innovative collections of unique charms, unfinished stones, pearls and various non-traditional findings. You will find so many different looks that catch your eye. These necklaces make an easy finishing touch and great gift for women of every look and age. They are surprisingly lightweight, comfortable to wear and priced right. The selection at LBMgifts includes striking stone pendants on fine chains to freshwater pearls mixed with suede or leather and other unusual combinations. We are always excited to find and introduce new designers who handcraft most of their collections.

So now that winter is finally behind us, go ahead and treat yourself (and your friends) to a guilt free gift and get your spring season started!

HOW TO BE A GREAT GIFT GIVER ON VALENTINE’S PART II: WHAT TO GET HIM

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’s time to get the remaining names on your gift list taken care of and crossed off. In Part I, we offered gift suggestions for guys searching for delightfully thoughtful (not necessarily expensive and/or cliché) gifts for their favorite ladies. But now, what to get him? Whether it’s your main squeeze, dad or platonic best friend, coming up with new gifts for guys continues to be, for the most part, a challenge. The good news is that is really isn’t as daunting as it seems. Whether it is something practical (like the latest cordless super model drill or the newest top of the line golf club), humorous (think useful gadgets with a twist) or pampering (real men do light candles!), at LBMgifts, we find that most well adjusted guys are sincerely touched when they feel the thoughtfulness behind your gift selection.

Here are a few ideas to get you on the track to finding just the right thing.

The Well Traveled man:
Practical yet tasteful travel pieces like
~ leather passport covers,
~ complete grooming sets and roomy toiletry bags. (Every man's dopp kit needs replacing at some point)
~ Now that most airlines charge for bags, a good quality carry on overnighter would be another appreciated idea.
~books like 1,000 Places to Visit Before You Die or compact size guides with local maps to upcoming destinations.

feature gift:

The Well Groomed Man:
Pampering items like
~ musky scented or fine quality athletic soaps
~ woodsy scented candles
~ shaving and grooming accessories.

(Gal Advice: Shave-ophiles and would be shave-ophiles will appreciate a well made badger brush and solid Mach III shaver. Look for weighty, well shaped handles that feel good to hold. Don’t forget shave soaps and creams.)

~ Luxuriously comfortable robes that are lofty, but not bulky, for après shower or lounging on Sunday mornings over a leisurely brunch.

feature gift:

The Well Read Man:
~ anything on his book wish list
~ handsome, heavyweight bookends that depict his interests or passions. One of LBMgifts customer favorites is a pair of weathered cast iron Westies well-priced at $52.00.

Gal Advice: When given the choice, opt for cast iron over other materials, like resin or wood. The natural weightiness of cast iron makes bookends much more effective at doing their job.

~ reading accessories: book marks, mini book lights—so he can read in bed without shining light in your sleeping face.

Gal Advice: Look for bookmarks that hold a photo and add one of the kids.

The Well Organized Man:
~ valet trays
~ business card cases and money clips
~ desk frames and travel frames (including recent photos of you, the kids, or all to you to perk up his day or show his clients)
~ desk organizers to hold papers, notes and envelopes , like multi function paperweights, business card and letter holders. Another LBMgifts customer favorite is a pair of rubber buddhas on a stand that hold papers between their bellies.
~ pens, pens, pens—Every man appreciates a good pen. Available at all price ranges, a comfortable writing instrument makes quick communications more enjoyable.

feature gift:

So, now you are armed and ready to go to your local shops or online to find the perfect gift(s) for your Valentine guy(s). Don’t forget the final touch… beautiful gift wrap and a heartfelt card!

HOW TO BE A GREAT GIFT GIVER—VALENTINE’S DAY PART 1: ADVICE FOR THE GUYS

Lovers, Spouses and Secret Admirers!
From the silent type to the fluent conversationalist, we speak your language… the language of love.

On Valentine’s Day, we want to remember all our significant someone(s) at home, at work
or school and in our social circle. Playing Cupid, so soon after the holiday season, can be tough on your budget. But like other gift giving occasions, you should set a limit (as hard as it may be to put a price tag on love!) and make your list, starting with your significant other and kids, followed by close family members, your dearest friend(s) and those who have gone out of their way to save the day or make your life a bit easier.

Diamonds and rubies, sapphires and emeralds… all good. But, you might find that they are out of your price range this year for most people on your list. From trinkets to treasures, “think out of the (shiny, lacy heart shaped) box”! Expressions of love and appreciation come in many shapes and sizes, so you don’t have to settle for the proverbial (and commercial) chocolates or (obscenely overpriced) bouquet of roses.

Instead, sweep up your Valentine(s) with sublime gifts that don’t wilt or tip the scale and will be appreciated by most anyone long after the 14th has past. Besides, your recipient would probably prefer to wear your gift on her ears, neck or wrist than on her hips or thighs (with, perhaps, the exception of exquisite lingerie)!

Ideas for HER

Affordable Jewels:
~Handmade, semi-precious jewelry with mixes of amethyst, garnet, peridot or citrine in earrings and delicate pendant necklaces.
~Sterling silver pieces featuring words or symbols including karma, love, peace and inspirational phrases on cuff bracelets and coin shaped charm necklaces.
~Trendy jewelry like big earrings, chunky bracelets and statement necklaces

(Guy Advice: When selecting big earrings, make sure they are not too heavy. All earrings should be finished with NICKEL FREE hooks or wires to prevent allergic reactions.)

click here to see our feature gift

Must Have Accessories:
Fashionable bags in all sizes. Color is the new black, and leather-like materials make the price right.
Choose from many in style looks, such as:
~ oversized bags (We love Big Buddha bags)
~ reuseable totes in vibrant prints ( Going Green is always in style)
~colorful and functional wallets

(Guy advice: Trust your instincts when making your selection, and, if you don’t, find a knowledgeable salesperson. Include a gift receipt, so she’ll be happy either way.)

click here to see our feature gift

Makes Good Scents:
Aromatherapy takes the edge off a stressful day.
Give scented gifts, such as:
~ room diffusers—they fragrance a room without flames and last for months.
~ scented soy candles – they burn clean and smell delightful
~ fine soaps and body lotions and, don’t forget, her favorite perfume.

(Guy Advice: Unless she’s actually allergic to fragrance, every woman likes to smell and to smell something good.)

click here to see our feature gift:

Comfortably Cozy:
Soft, pretty and comfortable treats, such as:
~ luxuriously soft robes ( Baby, it’s (still) cold out there) ,
~ exquisite lingerie
~ pretty slippers
~ lavender pillows and neck wraps.

click here to see our feature gift:

Beautiful Home:
Pretty details for the home, such as:
~ decorative frames (with a photo of you, both of you or the kids)
(Guy advice: Go the distance… find a decent picture, bring it to the store or email to us, and we’ll put it in before wrapping)
~ unusual entertaining pieces
Beautiful handpainted trays and bowls in all sizes, embellished serving pieces

(Guy Advice: Note the word “entertaining”-- that means not for every day utilitarian use—that means no irons, bread boxes, coffee makers or vacuums)

click here to see our feature gift:

Now you are armed and ready with all the advice and ideas you need to look like a hero and enjoy a wonderful Valentine’s Day with yours. Finally, be sure your gift is be wrapped to the nines. Presentation is everything, and this is never more true than on Valentines. Like it or not, details count big on this occasion—so on that note, a last piece advice… No matter how much you spend, don’t forget the card!

NEW SEASON LOOKS DON’T HAVE TO COST A FORTUNE- PART III: FOR (NOT SO) COLD WEATHER- HATS, SCARVES AND GLOVES

You don’t have to go out and buy a new coat. Instead, update the one(s) you have with the many fun, fashionable and affordable cold-weather accessories of the season. From head to hands, textured, patterned and chunky knits dominate. Fingerless gloves (sounds like an oxymoron, but read on!) will be even more popular with the evergrowing “texting” crowd. Floppy brimmed caps and wool knit cloches will top heads as the weather gets cold. While the biggest wardrobe addition of all will be the wide choice of novel and interesting scarves.

HEAD TOPPERS
Not surprisingly, with so much body heat loss coming from your head, hats are for more than just fashionistas. From sensible to stylish, hats make a statement about you, whether you put one on for one reason or the other, or both. Look for a silhouette that, most importantly, is comfortable to wear. The fit should feel right, and the fabric should be non-irritating against your skin so it can be worn for long periods of time. And finally, your hat should work with the look and color of your coat or outfit.

The big shape this year is the floppy beret with or without a brim in cables and other chunky knits and crochet stitches. Details will include pompoms, fabric flower and fur (let’s support the “faux” version) adornments.

The last, but not least, trendy touch is color. Look for hats in a big selection of great hues that coordinate with all the colored suede boots—in addition to proverbial black, choose from rich tones of plum, teal, deep red and mustard yellow.

Be adventurous. This is not a big investment, and, as my niece so wisely put it, “ there’s nothing wrong with going a little bit out of your comfort zone.”

NECK WRAPS
You will find a diverse collection of lengths, shapes and colors, this season that will change the look of your outfit in an instant. With a plethora of choices at a wide range of prices, you will have a hard time picking your must-haves and must-gives.

Starting with pattern, texture and color, choices abound—from plaids, stripes and paisley patterns to ruched, brushed and novelty stitches. When it comes to scarves, don’t just reach for black (or brown). This is the piece that should add a splash of color to your all-black ensemble.

We, at LBMgifts, see the lighterweight, dressier scarves as an alternate to the statement necklaces we are wearing this Fall. Drapey fabrics of with burn-out velvet and appliqué designs feel comfortable and add an instant finishing touch. Also, try out the almost blanket size, ultra-thin wraps that may be the most versatile scarf you’ve ever owned. This silhouette easily loops around the neck without feeling bulky, or wear it open as an impromptu full length shawl. Another interesting and versatile shape is the trapezoid that can be wrapped or tied a multiple of ways. Our favorite is our pompom trimmed style that comes in six gorgeous colors and is affordably priced at $24.00.

Don’t forget that scarves also make wonderful gifts for the Holiday season for just about every woman or man on your list. You can find one for every taste and at every price range to fit your gift giving budget. Everyone wears one and needs to have more than one at hand for a finishing accessory or dash out the door.

HAND SAVERS
Your hard working hands must be well protected from the cold as the temperature drops. This season, gloves offer fashion along with warmth. There are lots of options out there in a variety of lengths, colors and details. Whether leather, suede, velvet or knit, these gauntlets will feature ruching and gathering, ruffled borders and button closures.

With the emergence of sleeveless and short sleeved dresses, as well as, three-quarter and bracelet sleeved jackets and coats, fashionable and functional arm warmers and (really) long gloves will cover bare arms perfectly. Keeping cozy never looked so chic!

Fingerless gloves, the style that used to be just an “I don't get it" look, now takes on a new meaning. Have you ever tried texting with gloves on? From cute flip top mittens to glamour-esque elbow reaching styles, fingerless features give you the ability to keep in touch without missing a key. The LBMgift pick is a trendy cabled pair from San Diego Hat Company. These make a really unique gift for the younger crowd!

Once again, color, color, color. Match your colored bag, match your colored boots. You can’t go wrong, since most everything goes with black!

Now you and everyone on your gift list can be warm and fashionable this season. Remember, you don’t have to break your budget to give and get great accessories that will be worn and appreciated until the Spring.

DEW DROP IN--GUESS WHO'S GETTING MARRIED

LBM hosted another Dew Drop In this past Friday afternoon: this one, to celebrate Jen and Danny's engagement. Donned in a psychedelic shift dress and wide band beaded veil, Jen greeted our guests (while Danny slaved at the hot stoves next door) and shared her exciting news and "how it all happened'"

There were lots of refreshments and even a craft to keep the kids entertained. Moms got to peruse Jen's Wish List book and get some of their own shopping done. In addition, we held a raffle for a beautiful "Style Star" bag from Big Buddha and gift certificate to our website store.

And now for the winner... Congratulations to Shari Scharlat! Come on down and get your fabulous Fall bag.

PURCHASE WITH A PURPOSE: SUPPORTING BREAST CANCER RESEARCH

The entire month of October is special as we take this time to be cognizant of the work that has been and still needs to be done with breast cancer prevention, treatments and other support to patients, survivors and their families.

This year, Lou, Babs & Moogs designated portions of sales on products in their POP CULTURE collection to benefit Pennies in Action (www.penniesinaction.org) in their search for a vaccine that would prevent this devastating disease. Word of our “WHAM! BAM! POW! HELP KNOCK OUT BREAST CANCER” program was spread through the donated work of PowerTech International and generously supported by our customers throughout the month.

Based on the enthusiastic response in store, next year’s Breast Cancer Month promotion will be expanded to include online purchases so everyone can find something great to purchase while contributing to a most worthwhile cause. But with another week to go, there is still plenty of time to participate. Stop in, give us a call (516)883-8585 or send us an email (askus@LBmgifts.com) – tellus what you want and we will even ship it free.

NEW FALL LOOKS DON'T HAVE TO COST A FORTUNE-- PART II: BAGS- WHAT'S IN YOURS?

This week we focus on one of a woman's top weaknesses bags. There's nothing like a new bag or two to start the new season with a new attitude. When shopping for Fall, think color and metallic finishes for you (you know you are going to get at least one for yourself) and that gift for your best friend!

Predominating the look for Fall is the soft and carefree Boho Chic. As you peruse shops and online sites, you will notice lots of comfortable hobo shoulder and cross body styles a la 1960's, but the newness is the details from long fringe with studs and grommets to woven and embossed texture to blanket stitching, topstitching and burnished hardware.

However, sloppy-casual doesn't go everywhere you do, so also important on the bag scene are more tailored shapes like satchels and designer inspired dome shapes. For dressier looks, the must-have piece is the clutch. Styles include elongated clutch, envelop clutch, framed clutch with jeweled or metal closures that can go to work, lunch with the girls, high power business dinners or after hours clubs!

All this newness may sound like a bank-breaker, but there is so much out there to choose from that won't. My picks include many of the trendy styles from the Big Buddha. Their Fall collection encompasses all the fashion right aspects and colors with their faux-suede fringe bag, leather-like slouchy bags, big rose dome bag and chic clutches at way under $100 price tag.

NEW FALL LOOKS DON'T HAVE TO COST A FORTUNE

PART I: JEWELRY- THE IDEAL TRANSITIONAL ACCESSORY

Fall 2009 is just around the corner. Back to school, back to work—the lazy summer days are coming to a close.

As you peek at your packed-away cold weather wardrobe and at your not yet replenished disposable income, you may wonder how you are going to update your look for the coming season without feeling even more of a pinch.
Accessory designers have heard your call! From hats and wraps, to jewels and bags, Fall fashion pieces abound and at very affordable prices. So, go out (or online) and discover fun and trendy items to update last year’s looks from head to toe.

This week we focus on jewelry—quick and easy to pick and put on. Also, trendy jewelry pieces make a great gift for your friends, collegues or family relatives for any occasion. Who wouldn’t enjoy a new glamorous necklace or stunning pair of earrings?

Statement pieces give Fall 2009 its distinctive direction and a big bang for your buck! Look for necklaces with oversized clear and colored faceted glass stones, carved resin flowers and laser cut metals intermixed on snake chains and layered link chains. At all lengths and finishes, the presentation is nothing short of dramatic.

null

Bracelets continue to be an important accessory piece. There are many styles to choose from-- stretch bracelets, chunky bangles, jeweled cuffs and also bold face watches. On a practical note, when picking your bracelet of the day, make sure it not only matches, but is also comfortable and won’t get in the way of what you have to get done that day. “Fashion functional” applies to everything for us busy girls, but especially to bracelets.

Click here to see our selections.

You can never have enough…earrings. It is most probably the easiest and most noticed jewelry accessory you wear. . This Fall, the big but lightweight look is still on trend. Don’t buy or give earrings that feel heavy. They may look enticing, but being able to wear them for only a few hours before they hurt is not the way to go. With this season’s designs that incorporates laser cut metals designs, bits of leather, fabric and feathers, and sparkling stones and beads, stylish earrings can be achieved without the extra weight.

Click here to see our selections

So, start your shopping now, and you will be ready to transform your Fall wardrobe as soon as the calendar turns. Fashion jewelry makes the ideal transitional accessory, especially on Indian summer days, when it’s too late to wear white but too hot to don wool.

TEACHERS (GIFTS) COME IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES

TEACHERS (GIFTS) COME IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES

Chuck the apples (with and without worms), rulers and blackboards marked “A+” when selecting gifts for your child’s teachers. Imagine how many of these a seasoned teacher has received over the years!

Instead, think “out of the classroom” and the great gift ideas are endless. For women, teachers of any age like to be in style. If you happen to know her well, zero in on something that matches an outfit you saw her in or that reminds you of her personality—earrings, bracelets, or chunky necklaces for summer accessorizing.

If you feel jewelry is too “personal”, almost everyone enjoys a blissfully scented candle, triple milled soap or other aromatherapy item because pampering items are not usually purchased for oneself. So, for $25 and less, you can make her feel relaxed and appreciated.

Got a guy teacher? You know he’s going to be flooded with gift cards from Starbucks and Barnes and Nobles, which will be spent and forgotten. Think “unique and useful” somthing he will enjoy using and remind him of his year with your child. May we suggest conversational desk organizers like our twin Buddhas letter holder, photo paperweights and multi function keyrings—or well designed travel items (teachers go places on all their breaks and summer holidays). Again, there is lots to choose from in that $25 range.

Finally, don’t forget the final touch…. a card with short handwritten note of appreciation from you and your child.
